New software uses facial recognition to defend against prying eyes

Posted by admin | Uncategorized | Saturday 13 October 2012 1:10 am

Having the right programs and hardware to keep the information on your display safe from prying eyes is never a bad idea, and new software from Oculis Labs offers a very interesting take on how to do just that. It’s called PrivateEye, and it utilizes facial recognition to automatically pixelate the contents of your display when you look away.

If you step away from your system and someone else decides to sit down and poke around, PrivateEye will present a confusing jumble of garbled text. It’ll even notify you if someone tries to peek over your shoulder — and display a picture of your peeping Tom, throw up an alert, or sound an alarm.

Check out the video embed after the break, and share your thoughts in the comments!

Windows 8 wallpaper available to download, Jupiter and Twin UI spotted

windows 8 wallpaper

With Windows 8 milestone 3 now up for grabs for select Microsoft Connect partners, it’s inevitable that leaked bits and pieces will start popping up around the Web. In fact, the first “official” wallpaper image from the still-brewing OS is already making the rounds.

As you can see, it’s got a similar feel to the good ol’ Windows 7 default background, but features a more subdued smattering of cerulean hues. Those of you who want to use the Windows 8 wallpaper on your current desktop can download it from our file dump.

A few other details have been revealed, too. According to ZDNet’s source, the Windows 8 Jupiter libraries and Twin UI are starting to take shape — though all that’s been located thus far are “[various files] scattered throughout the OS” and the aptly-named twinui.dll.

Reports of the Mouse’s Death Are Not Greatly Exaggerated

Posted by admin | Uncategorized | Saturday 13 October 2012 12:10 am

The mouse may be running scared. That’s the kind with buttons and scroll wheel — not the tailed, furry variety that elephants are afraid of. How long has the mouse got? Way back in the dark slate ages of 2008, Gartner analyst Steve Prentice made a startling prophecy based on his observations of multiple computer interfaces that used gestures and other interactions.

Tasty Planet is a fun flash game where you eat everything in sight

tastyplanet

So this professor comes up with a new toilet cleaner that works by “eating” the dirt; or so he thinks. That’s how the plot starts for Tasty Planet. You play the role of the toilet cleaner, but you’re not really a toilet cleaner after all — you’re a blob of gray goo that can eat anything that’s smaller than yourself.

As you chomp away, you grow — and as you grow, you can eat bigger and bigger stuff. The first level pits you against microscopic particles; by the time I stopped playing, I got all the way to eating cats and dogs. I know that sounds disturbing, but it’s a really cute game, and there’s no gore or anything like that.

Supposedly you keep growing and growing until you’re able to eat whole planets (hence the name). The challenge factor comes when you realize you can’t touch any critter larger than yourself – you’ll get “bitten” and become smaller. In the beginning you’re so small, that a single touch can kill you. Later on, you’re big enough that touching larger animals doesn’t kill you on the spot, but it does reduce your size. Each level is timed, so if you’re not large enough by the time your clock runs out, you need to start again. As long as you don’t touch the larger animals, you should be fine.

All in all, a fun, addictive little game. It’s available for iOS, too.

Gmail for Android 4.2 purportedly features pinch-to-zoom, new gesture controls

Posted by admin | Uncategorized | Friday 12 October 2012 11:10 pm

Android Central

The Android 4.2 and LG Nexus rumors keep on coming, as this morning we're hearing reports of what could be in the next version of Gmail for Android. According to Android Police, which claims to have obtained the new version of Gmail from an LG Nexus system dump, we'll be able to look forward to some long-awaited features in Gmail for Android 4.2.

First up, the site claims we'll finally be getting pinch-to-zoom in messages, a feature long absent from Gmail, and much requested by Android users. This should hopefully make large HTML-based emails a little easier to handle on mobile. Other reported changes include the ability to swipe messages away to delete or archive them, just like in the notification shade. And finally, there's now the ability to report phishing directly from within the app. Not huge changes, but we're sure many Gmail users will be pleased to see pinch-to-zoom finally arrive after all this time.

It's also interesting that this new version of Gmail is marked as 4.2. Typically when a major new version of Android ships, Google apps are updated to bring them in line with the new OS software version. This would match what we've heard from our own sources, that the next Nexus smartphone is currently being tested with Android 4.2, rather than the older 4.1.2 seen in leaked photos.

Not long now, folks. The LG Nexus, which has leaked in various forms over the past week, is reported to make its  official debut towards the end of the month.

Tarzan Ball is a tricky hook-and-pull physics game

Posted by admin | Uncategorized | Friday 12 October 2012 10:20 pm
tarzanball

So, you’re a ball. A Tarzan Ball, to be precise. You’ve earned the nickname thanks to your astonishing ability to shoot out a lengthy ‘vine’ (I hope it’s a vine) at objects, and then pull yourself towards those objects.

That’s a handy ability to have, especially since you’ve got no legs, no arms, and no other means of transportation. In Tarzan Ball, the rope is everything. But you don’t just swing around the screen aimlessly – that wouldn’t be much of a game now, would it?

Instead, your goal in life is to collect “targets”. Each level has one of these “targets” hidden away somewhere on the screen, usually behind some kind of barrier. Once you navigate close enough to the target, you can shoot your rope at it and just reel it in. That’s when you pass the level.

You can’t die in this game, but it can still be very frustrating. It’s actually one of the tougher games I’ve posted recently. Still, if you enjoy physics games, this one is quite nicely made.

[This is actually the sequel to IQ Ball, which we covered last year! -Ed]

Rogers, CIBC may launch Suretap NFC-based payments on October 15th, require a unique SIM

Rogers, CIBC may launch Suretap NFCbased payments on October 15th, require a unique SIM

Rogers and Canadian bank CIBC struck a deal for NFC-based mobile payments back in May, long enough ago that it was starting to fade out of the public consciousness. The alliance may be near refreshing our memory with a commercial launch in the cards. MobileSyrup has reportedly scored internal documents that has the two launching their e-commerce collaboration on October 15th under a slightly catchier Suretap name. Unfortunately, the text also suggests that the initial launch will require at least as much hoop-jumping from customers as for the original Google Wallet plans. Avoiding a traditional wallet will demand a BlackBerry Bold 9900 or Curve 9360 on Rogers, a CIBC MasterCard, nearby stores with PayPass terminals, a CIBC app and now a special NFC-enabled SIM card — a set of criteria that disqualifies almost everyone, especially when there’s supposedly a $50 ceiling on transactions. It remains a step forward for mobile payments in a country that has had very few options to start with, but we’d only anticipate widespread adoption once there’s a much wider selection of devices and banks.
